Hanoi Hotels
The grande dame is the centrally located Sofitel Metropole, the new 5* Intercontinental on West Lake is gorgeous although about 10 minutes distant from the center, and both the Hanoi Hilton and Melia are accessible and comfortable. They all run $150 + per night. New boutique hotels have opened recently near the Cathedral, for about $80 per night. But my favorite home away from home in Hanoi, is the $35 a day Freedom Hotel at 57 Hang Trong Street, tel +84 4 (0)38267119, email freedomhotel@hn.vnn.vn Perfect location - 2 minutes on foot to Hoan Kiem lake, and to newly gentrified Cathedral area, friendliest staff possible, absolute security for guests and their belongings. Ask for one of the front rooms overlooking Hang Trong Street to see early morning Hanoi - fruitsellers on bicycles, street exercises and children in school uniforms. The owner, Mme Phuong, runs a tight ship and I’d trust her with my life, kids, etc. And yes, they do airport pickup.
